A New Face in an Old Scene
Our artists began with Munch's own layout and changed as little of it as they could. The railing still cuts across the dial from corner to corner, painted here in yellow and hot pink. Above it, the sky churns in loose, looping strokes of green, orange, blue and white, set against black where Munch had blood red. Low on the right, where his figure stood, a character from contemporary pop culture takes its place, drawn in fine outline and caught at the height of the scream.
Every stroke is laid down by hand in neon pigment, which is why no two dials match exactly. In daylight the colors read bright against the dark ground. Under UV light the scene turns over completely — the black disappears, the strokes burn pink, green, cyan and violet, and the figure's outline glows among them. It is the same painting twice, one for daylight and one for the UV lamp.
